A Mommy Makeover in San Francisco is Usually Performed in One Surgery

First, what is a Mommy Makeover? My practice is located in the suburbs south of San Francisco, and our local population includes a lot of “mommies” that want to get their before-baby figure back, yet they have had permanent damage or changes to their body.

A Mommy Makeover most commonly refers to a combination of both Breast Augmentation and Tummy Tuck surgeries. Breast Augmentation with silicone or saline implants can help restore lost volume and enhance the size and shape of the breast.

If needed, a breast lift may be recommended to address sagging or dropping of the breasts. Tummy Tuck surgery is the most powerful option for rejuvenation of the abdominal and hip areas, and can address problems with (1) damaged or excess skin, (2) excess fat, and (3) looseness of the muscle wall of the abdomen.

How many surgeries does a San Francisco Mommy Makeover take? One surgery In the vast majority of cases, I perform Mommy Makeover procedures in one trip to the operating room.

This is not to say that I take combined-procedures lightly. Quite the opposite: we rigorously evaluate patient’s health, nutrition and risk factors for surgery and work to optimize these preoperatively.

Two or more surgeries Multiple surgeries may be recommended for where we have concerns about a patient’s health or issues that may compromise their surgery or recovery.

Some examples include: obesity, diabetes, anemia, poor physical health, prior large open scars on the abdomen, or a need for raising the breast and nipple a large amount.

I do not perform Tummy Tuck surgery on smokers (although I am all-for helping these patient become former smokers).

Surgery timing

Everyone recovers differently but 6 weeks is usually enough time between surgeries. As long as there are no complications from your first surgery and your health is good that would seem appropriate

We often perform breast implant/lift surgery at the same time as tummy tuck, a combination known as mommy makeover. This is safe and effective and requires only one surgery, one anesthesia and one recovery.

Unless there are other factors affecting the need for 2 surgeries, I would suggest you consider combining the 2. You may wish to seek additional consultations to discuss other options.

If you were having just a tummy tuck, I would say your drains would be in from 5 to 10 days. The fact you are having liposuction as well may cause the drainage to go on a little longer.

Its hard to give a specific time frame for drain removal and most surgeons would be looking for the drainage to get low, approximately 25 to 30 cc per day for a few days and then remove them.

I don’t use drains for breast augmentations.

I typically leave the drains in for 1-2 weeks. If the drains are getting more than 30ml/day I leave them in a little longer.

Payment options for mommy makeover

Most physicians have a relationship with financing companies such as Care Credit, Chase Financial, or M-Lend.

If obtaining credit is a challenge, some of your other options may be pre-payment of your surgery or you can ask a friend or family member to co-sign for a loan to use towards your surgery so that you don’t have to wait to save-up the funds.

Timing Is Important – Plan for Your Mommy Makeover

There are many eminently qualified surgeons in San Francisco with extensive experience in Mommy Makeover surgery. Although patients do travel to have surgery, it is always optimal to have your surgeon close to home during the post-op period.

This is particularly true for abdominalplasty surgery, which is part of a Mommy Makeover. Any flight in which you are seated for several hours increases your risk of deep vein thrombosis after abdominal surgery, which then increases your risk for a life-threatening pulmonary embolus.

Certainly it would be in your best interest to avoid this risk. The timing of Mommy Makeover Surgery ideally will take place when your breasts have stopped producing milk and have returned to a pre-pregnancy state. I generally recommend six months after the completion of nursing.

This six-month window gives your body a chance to recover from the demands of nursing and a return to baseline hormonal fluctuations.
