Early in my career I would tell patients to lose weight to get as close to their ideal weight as they could so that they would get a better improvement. But they would often “yoyo” on me – loosing a lot of weight and then gaining it back. I now ask them to be at a weight that they think they can maintain. Ten or fifteen pounds one way or the other probably doesn’t make much of a difference, but 20-25 pounds or more can certainly make a difference.

Nipple areolar size (diameter) is a matter of personal preference. I was taught that 4.5 cm was “normaI”. However, I generally feel that smaller is more youthful and use 3.8 cm for smaller breasts and 4.2cm for larger breasts. I do discuss nipple areola size with each breast surgery patient to get an idea of what they would like.

Babies can affect a mothers belly in several ways. Pregnancy and childbirth usually causes the mothers abdominal muscles to bulge and stretch and gives her that “pooch” of loose skin and fat that she just can not get rid of. I typically only use dissolvable stitches/sutures with my mommy makeover patients. I do use a non-dissolvable suture to secure any drains that I might place, but these are removed along with the drains at 1-2 weeks. I prefer to remove any non-dissolvable external skin sutures in 7-10 days to avoid cross hatching or railraod track scars. However, some patients heal slower than others and I will leave their sutures in longer.

I typically place Episeal strips (adhesive paper strips) on my patients at the end of the procedure and leave them on for one or two weeks as long as there is no drainage or bleeding. If you are happy with your cup size but not with the sagging, a breast lift is the best option. Depending on how much fat was removed, and how much fluid was used during the procedure, it is very normal not to notice any changes at 2 weeks. It often takes at least 1 month to notice any significant change, and can take up to 4 months to get your final result.

It all depends on how much excess skin you have above and/or below the belly button. If the excess skin is only below the belly button, then you only need a transverse incision, but if you have excess skin above and below, then you need a transverse and vertical incision.
