Getting back to work after mommy makeover

A mommy makeover in Scottsdale AZ involves a tummy tuck and breast lift. They’re may also be an augmentation.

During a tummy tuck a low incision is made across the abdomen the abdominal wall is tightened above and below the belly button (muscle repair), and the excess skin is trimmed.

It is the abdominal wall tightening that typically slows down patients while recovering from a mommy makeover. The abdominal wall tightening means that you cannot lift anything heavy or participate in vigorous activity for six weeks.

Most patients are back to work after two weeks, but patients with a more active job may need to take three weeks off. Heavy lifting should be avoided for six weeks total. This gives the muscle repair time to heal.

You should wait for a few weeks before you get back to work, up to about a month. Better to ask your surgeon for their advice, though.

I generally have my patients stop breast feeding a minimum of six months before mommy tuck.

Due to the risks of flying following some types of elective surgery, I would also suggest that you research a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon closer to your home. Should a complication arise following surgery, you are going to want your surgeon to be a cab ride, not a plane ride away.

You should probably wait at least 6 weeks before you do any of these activities again, since you’ll be having a pretty intense surgery. However you should ask your surgeon for their advice.

Each doctor has their own recommendations in regards to scar treatments. Silicone based products have been proven to help with reducing the appearance of scars.

Silicone sheeting is an option and also a scar cream that has both silicone and a steroid (Hybrisil). Do your homework and talk to your surgeon as to the best option for you.

Mommy makeover scars usually fade.

The key steps to get good scars are taken DURING mommy lift. After wards, taping for a month followed by a gel twice daily, followed by laser in the few cases where it is necessary.

How long to wait after breast feeding for mommy makeover

I generally recommend waiting at least 3 months after breast feeding before considering a mommy makeover in Scottsdale. You want to give time for your breasts to “settle” after breast feeding. There will be some volume loss and possible more sagging. In addition, you want to make sure you’ve lost all your baby weight before opting for a mommy makeover.

Drains and mommy makeover

Drains will probably only be necessary for the tummy tuck and typically stay in 1-2 weeks, rarely 3 week for one of the drains. Each patient is different. Ask your plastic surgeon what his/her “rules” are for removing the drains.

Each and every plastic surgeon has a different approach on this. Mine is to wait long enough that the volume coming out is low and you won’t have left over fluid forming where your body can’t absorb it. Called a seroma.

The color of the fluid in the drain is also is a key to when to remove the drains.

SO if your doctor tells you he always takes drains out at day such and such that is fine. Some of us try to be less rigid and try to outsmart your body.

There is nothing wrong with waiting a few extra days to remove them.

Drains are removed when the fluid decreases to a certain amount (different for different surgeons).

In general thay can be removed by the end of a week, rarely more than two weeks. I use drains for tummy tuck procedures but not for breast surgery. Check with your surgeon.

Drains are not typically needed after liposuction or breast augmentation. Most surgeons us drains for about 1 week after tummy tucks but there are techniques that allow for a “no drain” tummy tuck. Google “no drain tummy tuck gutowski” for more information

Any licensed medical doctor can claim to be a “cosmetic” or “plastic surgeon.” When in the need for a neurosurgeon, you would want a real neurosurgeon right?
